We start the year by explaining how scientists learn about the world we live in. You will learn by doing the Plant Project. Just like scientists, you'll make observations, ask questions, conduct an experiment, and use the tools of science. It will probably take about 3 weeks to cover everything. The unit test should be in the week of Sept. 12.
In the plant Plant Project you will:
- Measure soil, count and plant seeds
- Measure and track the volume of water used
- Observe, measure, and record plant growth
- Identify dependent variables
- Establish and manipulate independent variables to test an hypothesis
- Compare and analyze results
- Communicate results and conclusions
Key Vocabulary: scientific method, hypothesis, controlled experiment, independent variable, dependent variable, control group, experimental group, constant, meter, volume, mass, temperature, area, density
